"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." This is one of the first sentences in our Declaration of Independence, and one of the most well-known lines from it, yet there is a well perpetuated belief that God was foreign to the Founders and had no influence on their decisions. This is simply false. Many of the Founders claimed some form of the Christian faith, and without Baptist preachers like Shubal Stearns and John Leland the Revolutionary War might never have happened. The Bible is in fact the most quoted source of influence by the Constitutional Convention, and many of those members have been quoted very favorably regarding the Bible and the Christian God. Benjamin Franklin once said, "Whoever will introduce into public affairs the principles of primitive Christianity, will change the face of the world."
Thomas Jefferson once said, "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever." He was right, God's justice cannot sleep forever, because the Bible says we're all sinners.
Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Because of our sins we will receive a just consequence.
"For the wages of sin is death..." Romans 6:23a. The just penalty for our sin is death.
God does not want anyone to go to Hell, so He sent His only begotten Son to die and pay the penalty for our sins. Romans 5:8 says "But God commendeth [showed] his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
God's love for us is so great that He made a way for our sins to be forgiven. He offers His forgiveness and salvation freely. "...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23b.
Please note that eternal life is offered to you as a gift. But, like all gifts, it is not yours until you receive it. To receive Christ is to receive eternal life in Heaven with Him.
Romans 10:9 says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." You must believe with all your heart, and call on the Lord to save you. "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:13.
"And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:" Acts 17:30. To repent literally means to have a change of mind toward God and toward sin. It means to turn from your sins, earnestly, with all your heart, and trust in Jesus Christ to save you. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Please call on the Lord, now. Ask God to save you of your sins, to cleanse you from all of your unrighteousness. Ask Him to come into your heart and save you. And thank Him for being your Saviour. The prayer won't save you, but Believing on Jesus and Professing Him with your mouth will.
